Transporting a bike by car is easy when the carrier fits your car and your bike, and when the bike is secured correctly. A loose bike can damage the car, the bike, and other road users.
Choose the right carrier
Roof carriers, boot carriers, and tow-bar carriers each suit different cars and bikes. Check the weight limit, wheel size, and frame type before buying. A carrier that does not fit your car properly is not a bargain, even if it is cheap.
Load and secure carefully
Follow the carrier instructions exactly. Secure wheels and frame straps, check that nothing touches the exhaust or the ground, and make sure lights and number plates stay visible. If lights are covered, use a light board, as the law requires.
Check before and during the trip
After loading, pull the bike firmly and check every strap. Stop after a short distance and check again, because straps can settle. At fuel stops, give the carrier a quick check, especially on long trips.
Unload with care
Unload on flat ground, away from traffic, and check the bike for damage before riding. Check brakes and wheels after transport, because a knock during loading can change adjustment.
Q: Can I put a bike inside the car instead?
A: Yes, if it fits safely without blocking the driver view. Remove wheels if needed, protect the car interior, and secure the bike so it cannot move in sudden braking.
