Most worn parts are not worn by riding alone. They are worn by small maintenance mistakes, repeated over months. Avoid these seven and your bike will last much longer.
1. Riding a dry or dirty chain
A dry chain wears the chain, cassette, and chainrings together. Clean it when it looks gritty, lube it lightly, and wipe off the excess. More lube is not better, because excess lube collects dust.
2. Over-tightening bolts
Too much force can strip threads or crack parts. Use the correct size tool, tighten evenly, and follow the torque guide for carbon parts and stems.
3. Ignoring tyre pressure
Low pressure causes pinch flats and rim damage, while very high pressure gives a harsh ride and less grip. Check pressure weekly with a gauge, not by squeezing the tyre.
4. Washing with a hard jet
A strong water jet can push dirt and water into bearings. Use a bucket, a soft brush, and gentle rinsing, then dry the chain and lube it.
5. Leaving the bike in rain and sun
Weather fades paint, rusts chains, and dries out rubber. Store the bike under cover when you can.
6. Shifting under full load
Ease off the pedals for a moment when you change gear, especially on a hill. Shifting under hard load bends and wears the drivetrain.
7. Waiting until something breaks
A small noise, a loose bolt, or a wobbly wheel is cheaper to fix early. A quick check before a ride often prevents a bigger repair.
Q: How often should I check my bike?
A: Do a quick check before long rides, a deeper check monthly, and a full service at least once a year, or sooner for daily riders.
